Post Birthday Check In: Hope, Uncertainty, Darkness

My last post was about my upcoming birthday and I was going to post that same day, but what a disaster it turned out to be. My mood was already shaky due to the ups and downs of perimenopause and my experiencing those hot flashes again, but alas I was still perked up and ready to celebrate my day. There is also the issue were I had been unable to sleep in my room for 2 weeks so far already due to an infestation in my room with pantry bugs and I had no idea where these things were coming from so I was forced to sleep on the couch and work on that uncomfortable couch instead of my desk and wonderfully cozy hybrid bed, so I was pretty sleep deprived.

Anyway, Saturday came and I woke up to a great breakfast eggs/with potatoes and fresh apple tea. I was excited to go outside and maybe watch the France/England game maybe at a bar later in the afternoon. There was also a block party I wanted to check out right outside our building, however the buckets of rain that started early and the heavy winds shut that down quick as did any plan to go outside and enjoy the day.

Then came dinner. Every year since I turned 30, my mom loves to make a drunken clams pasta dish. She purchased the clams the same day as she always does, but these clams were spitting out a lot of sand after she started cooking them. She left to go back to the fish market and my mood began to dip fast, so I figured let me take a nap and sleep this mood away. An hour or two later I woke up, took a shower and when I got out I smelled a rank fish smell in the apartment. My poor mom had returned with clams the fish market said were good, but these clams she was cooking were NOT good. Just a quick tip, fish is supposed to smell like the ocean. If you get fish and it smells like fish or ammonia, it’s not good and you need to throw it away immediately because that means the fish has spoiled. Needless to say, she didn’t get her money back and the back up pasta just had noodles, parsley and cheese and for some reason it wrecked my stomach. The hot flashes started aggravating me and I was soo deflated I decided to sleep the rest of the night. I felt like my mom and brother were annoyed with me because of my mood, but that wasn’t the case. I tried to snap out of it, but anyone with perimenopause knows how hard it is to control your emotions. At 1230am I woke up and went to the kitchen to grab a slice of Carvel ice cream cake my brother purchased the day before just so we could try it (since it had ingredients I could actually have) and sang myself happy birthday.

The day after was no better. I didn’t want to talk, or get up. I just sulked and slept. Monday then came, no hot flashes and my mood seemed to lift and quickly as it came crashing down. My brother got me a perfectly cute cake and we celebrated my 49th birthday properly. The cake was delicious, I was happy and all seemed right with the world. I thought as I usually do that things will be better now. The next two days were utter bliss and I felt I can push through anything!!! (that could have well been the sugar lol)

The days that followed and the rest of the month were rocky. The pain in my body was getting worse due to sleeping between the couch and my mom’s hard spring bed. Constantly going to my room to clean and try and look for where those bugs were coming from was killing me. I had seen something on reddit that said these things can come from heating pads filled with rice. I had a plush cat that had a small heating pack and I threw that away but it wasn’t that. Thankfully they were only confined to my room and I did get those sticky traps to see if that would prevent them from wandering anywhere else. I had already cleaned my room once with no luck, but my energy was in the pits, so I was only able to clean my room again with my mom and brother’s help. Two more times of cleaning and still no luck!!! Finally last Sunday, we found the source. I had another heating pad I had purchase from QVC years ago and was filled with rice. Well low and behold, upon closer inspection the cloth of the heating pad had disintegrated and the pantry bugs were all over. UGH GROSS!!!

If I had only inspected that bag closely when this first started, I would have saved myself from a lot of stress and physical pain from sleeping elsewhere. So far this week I have not seen any of those little bastards in the sticky traps so I am confident there are no more lingering around. Tomorrow I will clean my room yet again and finally sleep on bed.

At least that was one thing I could be happy about. There are a few other things that have been going on, but this post is long enough so I will post a fitness check in another day. For now I say goodnight my Phoenixes!
