Today I woke up absolutely ravenous. The hunger pangs and acid that my stomach produces when I am hungry is not fun. However I cannot eat breakfast so early in the morning lately because even though I’m hungry, I get nauseous. So I had a little bit of water, got dressed and did my 9th day straight of DDPY for the Beast Mode Program. 9 DAYS!! I haven’t worked out that many days in a row since last year when I started this blog. I have to say, I am slowly feeling the difference. Today after finishing Stand Strong II and feeling the chill in the air, I got inspired and began decorating the apartment for Halloween. Nothing extravagant, just decorations I hung in the living room, kitchen and hallway. I finished most of it with the exception of the end tables in the living room, but I did it!! I actually had the energy to do all of this before breakfast and before work!!!
My 3rd win for the day? I was alert throughout most of the workday which was amazing, until 3pm when I was starting to crash, but I ate some boiled potatoes which was enough to give me energy to finish out the workday.
Another win for today was that I was able to cut and dice yucca so my mom can make one of my papa’s favorite dishes…Alcapurrias. Alcapurrias are fritters made with yuca and stuffed with seasoned ground beef. Now this may not seem like a big deal, but it is. Yucca is a bit hard to peel and cut, so the fact that I was able to do this now when I wasn’t just a month ago when my mom made them is quite an accomplishment. Especially considering I haven’t been doing DDPY for very long. Yucca is a vegetable I never really ate much. Usually I have eaten this after my colonoscopies because it’s easy on my stomach and now with whatever is going on with my stomach, I have found it to be soothing on my digestive tract.

After doing a little quick research it’s not surprising. Research suggests that compounds in yucca may help reduce oxidative stress and support the body’s natural inflammatory balance. Antioxidants such as polyphenols may help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. Although it’s high in calories, which was surprising to me but beneficial right now, it’s also rich in vitamin C. Only caveat is you cannot eat this vegetable raw. It must be cooked properly before consuming.
After cutting up this gut friendly vegetable, I went outside for a walk to get in my steps and enjoy the chill in the air. Autumn is finally here!! This is my favorite time of year so I am thrilled and while I am missing out on a lot of the goodies and treats that this season brings, the crisp cool air and decorations in the stores for Halloween have put a smile on my face and made me feel like a kid again.
It’s the little things that help you get through the day. It’s stopping for a moment to jot down what you are grateful for when things are rough. It’s feeling like you have nothing left in you, but you get up anyway. I am definitely stronger than I give myself credit for despite days where I want to quit. Days where I wallow, but I eventually get back up. This year it hasn’t been easy, but then again last year wasn’t either, nor was the year before that and the years before that. Each year it’s something and each year I manage to find a way to get through it even if it means I have to curse, scream into a pillow or kick my deflated soccer ball around.
I have no idea what tomorrow will bring but I have to press on. For example today I got a call from radiology to tell me they have to reschedule my CT scan again because UH Healthcare still hasn’t approved my getting this done. It never ceases to amaze me the crappy health insurance we have in this country. I will be busy on the phone with them tomorrow to see what’s going on. For now, instead of getting angry, I am focusing on the good in my day and the fact that I will see my former coworkers in a few days for an escape the room adventure and I have another sound healing coming up so between the vibrations of the singing bowls and time with friends, I have a lot to look forward to.
Until next time my Phoenixes. What are you grateful for today? Remember to be patient with yourself and your journey and be kind to yourself and others.
