Fitness Check In Day 107: The Little Red Lighthouse

I posted in the beginning of August about my desire to walk to the Little Red Lighthouse that is somewhat near me. I then posted a picture of the vision board the end of August which had the picture of that Little Red Lighthouse. It was one of the goals I had and I did it!! This past Sunday after seeing how I was able to walk and explore at Comic Con, I told myself that I was ready to walk to the Little Red Lighthouse that site underneath the George Washington Bridge. I was positive it would be an easy walk and I have to say I was wrong!!!

Ever since I started the DDPYoga Beast Mode program, I have been very careful in trying not to overdo things. Between the low calorie count and the deconditioning, I told myself that this time things would be different. I would listen to my body and not push soo hard. To be able to walk around and do all I did at Comic Con, I purposely did Stand Strong I which is a shorter workout so I wouldn’t exhaust my muscles or body. This is why I didn’t lose steam. What I didn’t realize was all that walking and no stretching meant that my body needed to continue to take it easy and not push soo hard. Well I did anyway. I did two more complicated and longer workouts for my body (Haydn’s Stand Tall and Stand Strong IV) I did it and was excited and proud, however my quads, arms and shoulders are felt it when I did SSIV. On Saturday I did organized my closets which required a lot of bending from the legs, squatting and stepping up and down on a stool. Afterwards I showered, and went out for a quick walk to get groceries. The minute I started walking outside, I was disappointed and surprised at how heavy my legs felt. It was like lifting heavy anchors. My whole body felt stiff, painfully heavy and sore.

I got home and rested the rest of the night. I promised myself I would not overdo it and take better care of myself to prevent an injury. Then on Sunday morning, I was feeling good so I started to debate whether I should do Stand Strong II or III. My inner coach won out and I did Stand Strong I instead. I did promise myself after all and I made good on that promise. That is until I decided that Sunday was the day I was going to walk to the Little Red Lighthouse. I thought initially it was only 1.4 miles since that’s what the maps of my phone said. No biggie, I started walking with my brother, excited to see some of the leaves on the trees changing colors and enjoy the fresh air. Then I started noticing again how tired my legs were getting, so my brother suggested I sit on a bench for a few minutes. Fortunately there are a LOT of benches on this path which helped me later.

As we were only a few feet from the lighthouse, I checked my phone to see how many steps I had done. That’s when I saw that we had already walked 1.7 miles!!! A lot more than I thought. No matter, as soon as I was up close to the lighthouse I perked up. I completed another of the goals I had on my vision board!!!!! It was such a beautiful sight!!!! A cute petite piece of history! Not sure when my fascination for lighthouses began but I am excited I finally got to see one up close. That glowing beacon of hope in the middle of a dark ocean….the uniquely beautiful architecture that helps them withstand severe weather without collapsing and the curiosity of those who lived in them.

On my way back I was still relishing in the fact that I accomplished this feat of walking all the way over to this red cutie and then my quads started aching. I sat down for a few minutes then started up again until I began feeling little daggers on the plantar fascia of both feet. A small wave of panic washed over me and my brother guided me to another bench where we sat for about 10 minutes. I vented my disappointment and frustration because I walked a lot at Comic Con..I was ready for goodness sakes!! He pointed out something I did not even consider. Comic Con was different because the show floor where I spent a lot of time in is all carpeted which is much easier on the joints than concrete and even the rest of the Javits I was walking around with standard flooring is easier on the joints. To prove his point (he saw my stubborn skepticism) he told me to walk on the padding in a section of the kid’s playground. Yup I did feel the difference and I thought maybe I should have waited a little bit longer to tackle the task of going to The Little Red Lighthouse. However, what’s done is done and although I walked very very slowly, I made it back home. Between that and the mandatory 10 minute walk after dinner, I walked a total of 10,034 steps. Something I have not done this year at all and only achieved twice last year.

Yesterday I was wiped out so I ended up doing DDPYoga SSI later in the evening. Today I mustered up enough strength to do that workout in the morning but my entire body still feels heavy, tired and with a twinge of pain here and there. I am beyond proud of what I have accomplished thus far, but yesterday was a lesson to reign in my excitement to do more so quickly. I need to meet myself where I am at physically now…not where I think I am or want to be. Only by honoring my body this way, will I finish the 90 day Beast Mode program like a BEAST!

Enjoy the pictures of the Little Red Lighthouse!! Until next time my Phoenixes!!! Keep rising from the ashes to accomplish those dreams/goals. Keep fighting and keep going!
